10 Ways To Beat the Heat in South Carolina and Save Extra Cash
10 WAYS TO BEAT THE HEAT
Hey everyone!! Did you know that it is going to be 101 degrees here in South Carolina on Friday and Saturday? With the hot weather coming I thought 10 ways to save some money and to keep your house cooler would be a great thing to talk about! Here are 10 ways that you can keep your house cooler in the Summer and save on your electric bill.
1. Use a fan: Fans use less electricity to cool down the house and can cool a room down by 4-6 degrees.
2. Program your thermostat: This cools down the house in the hotter hours of the day without having to keep it at the same temperature in the cooler hours of the day.
6:00am-9:00am 75 degrees
9:00am-5:30pm 80 degrees
5:30pm-6:00am 80 degrees
3. Set your dial higher: Set your central air to 78 degrees. This will save you 5 to 8 percent off your cooling bill.
4. Use sun blockers for your windows: Sun blockers are blinds and things that help block the hot sun from coming into the house.
5. Install a programmable thermostat: When you use a programmable thermostat you can program it to only cool the house when you are in it. This will save you money on your electric bill.
6. Practice "Texas Cool": Texas cool is when at night when the temperature drops you open windows and bring in cool air in with window fans or a whole-house fan. As soon as the sun comes up or the air starts to heat up, shut the windows and shades and keep doors closed.
7. Cook smart: Try and cook outside on the grill or wait until the cooler hours of the day to cook on the stove or oven. Cooking with the oven can easily raise the house temperature 10 degrees!
8. Get cooler Light bulbs: Replace incandescent bulbs with compact florescent bulbs. This uses about 75 percent less energy and gives off 90 percent less heat.
9. Snug up ducts: Make sure all of your air conditioning ducts are snug. Leaky ducts cut into air conditioning efficiency.
10. Seal air leaks: Hunt down all leaks and seal them. Places there could be leaks are the attic, in the basement, between windows, between doors, electrical and plumbing to name a few. This will keep the cool air in and the hot air out of the house.
I hope these tips will not only keep you cool but put some extra cash back into your pockets. Remember to keep hydrated if you have to be out in the sun and make sure your pets have plenty of water and a cool place to lay out of the direct sun light!!
Thank You
Angie
